Abu Dhabi: Khalidiyah Park reopens with Dh42 billion strategy boost and modern design
62,000 sqm site redesigned to enhance community wellbeing
ABU DHABI – Khalidiyah Park has reopened in Abu Dhabi following a major redevelopment led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT).
Spanning more than 62,000 square metres, the upgraded site has been redesigned to promote a balanced lifestyle centred on fitness, leisure and community interaction.
The transformation aligns with the UAE Year of Family objectives, placing accessibility and inclusivity at the forefront of the park’s new layout.
Modern features
At the heart of the redevelopment is a 660-metre enclosed cooled walkway, designed to connect different zones of the park while encouraging year-round outdoor activity. Integrated rest areas have been added along the route, providing shaded spaces for visitors to pause and socialise. The improved layout ensures ease of movement for all, including senior citizens and People of Determination.
Eng Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director General of Infrastructure Development at the DMT, said the project reflects a forward-looking approach to urban design. He noted that the park’s historical and emotional value to residents was carefully preserved, with efforts focused on balancing modern enhancements with familiar elements.
Community spaces
The park now features a wide range of facilities catering to different age groups and interests. These include walking and jogging tracks, two multi-use games areas, and courts for football and handball. Five dedicated children’s play zones, including a sand play area, have also been introduced.
An amphitheatre has been added to host community events and performances, while a central park zone and a sunken garden with ambient lighting offer new gathering spaces designed to encourage social engagement.
Sustainable design
Environmental considerations were central to the redevelopment. Native and drought-tolerant plant species have been incorporated to reduce water consumption, supported by high-efficiency irrigation systems. Smart LED lighting has been installed across the park to improve energy efficiency.
The use of permeable surfaces and carefully selected materials helps create cooler microclimates while reducing long-term maintenance requirements. The project forms part of the wider Abu Dhabi Liveability Strategy, backed by a Dh42 billion investment aimed at enhancing quality of life across the emirate.
